PLTS Sambelia 5 MW Operates, Lombok is Supported by 7 Commercial PLTS
The 5 MegaWatt (MW) Solar Power Plant (PLTS) Sambelia in North Lombok, West Nusa
Tenggara (NTB) province, is a proof of the commitment to develop New Renewable
Energy (NRE) in Indonesia.
Construction of PLTS Sambelia started in August 2017, while its operation began
in December 2019. Besides being environmental friendly, the power plant raises
the efficiency of electricity production because it reduces the use of oil fuels
by power plants in NTB.
"Previously, there are 6 PLTS in Lombok, namely Gili Trawangan, Gili Air,
Gili Meno, Sengkol, Selong, and Pringgabaya. Now, there is this addition of PLTS
Sambelia with a capacity of 5 MW which started to operate at the end of
2019," said Head of Bureau of Communication, Public Information Services,
and Cooperation of Ministry of EMR, Agung Pribadi, in Jakarta (19/1).
PLN states that PLTS Sambelia's operation contributes positively to NTB's
energy mix. In June 2019, solar power plants contributed 0.1% to the province's
energy mix, but at the end of 2019, contribution by solar power plants picked
up to 2.8%.
"We're committed to continue the development of NRE in NTB. According to
the long-term plan, there are still several locations to be explored," explained
PLN's General Manager of West Nusa Tenggara Unit, Rudi Purnomoloka, in a press
release.
Rudi stated that in terms of production cost, a solar power plant is more
efficient compared to a diesel-fueled power station. "The difference is
about Rp 900 per kWH compared to a diesel-fueled power station. Although the
production cost is lower, our service to the public will not be affected,"
Rudi stated.
In total, PLN has now operated seven PLTS spread over Lombok Island. The seven
PLTS can supply 8.5% of total daytime capacity for the Lombok system which
reaches 233 MW.
PLTS Sambelia will also supply power to Mandalika Special Economic Zone and the
MotoGP race to be held in Mandalika in 2021. (IY)
