History
1945
The first institution administering mining in Indonesia is the Mining and Geological Service that was established on September 11th, 1945. Initially, the Service was named Chisitsu Chosajo, which was under the Ministry of Welfare.

1952
The Mining and Geological Service, which was previously under the Ministry of Industry, was changed to the Mining Directorate in accordance with Decision of Minister of Economy Number 2360a/M of 1954. The Mining Directorate consisted of Mining Service Center and Geological Service Center.

1957
In accordance with Presidential Decree Number 131 of 1957, the Ministry of Economy was divided into Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Industry. Based on Decision of Minister of Industry Number 4247 a/M of 1957, the centers under the Mining Directorate were changed to Mining Service and Geological Service.

The Ministry of Industry was divided into Department of Basic Industry and Mining, and Department of Public Industry. Oil and gas mining was under the Department of Basic Industry and Mining.

1961
The Indonesian Government established Oil and Gas Bureau under the Department of Basic Industry and Mining.

1962
The Geological Service and the Mining Service were changed to Geological Directorate and Mining Directorate, respectively.

1963
The Oil and Gas Bureau was changed to Oil and Gas Directorate under Deputy Minister for Mining Affairs and State Mining Companies.

The Department of Basic Industry and Mining was divided into three departments: Department of Basic Industry, Department of Mining, and Department of Oil and Gas Affairs.

Minister for Oil and Gas Affairs set the establishment of Oil and Gas Institution (Lemigas).

The Department of Oil and Gas Affairs was changed to Ministry of Mining and Oil & Gas which controlled the Department of Oil and Gas.

During the era of the Ampera Cabinet, the Department of Oil and Gas and the Department of Mining were merged into Department of Mining.

The Department of Mining was changed to Department of Mining and Energy.

The Department of Mining and Energy was changed to Department of Energy and Mineral Resources.

In accordance with Presidential Regulation 47/2009, the name 'Department' was changed to 'Ministry'.
