Additional 4.2 GW in 2019: Highest Achievement of 35 GW Program

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif in a press conference on Thursday (9/1) in Jakarta says that generation capacity in 2019 reached 69.1 GigaWatt (GW). This is 4.2 GW higher than the 2018 capacity of 64.9 GW. This increased capacity is the highest achievement realized in the 35 GW Power Plant Development Acceleration Program.

"In 2019, generation capacity reached 69.1 GW, increasing by 4.2 GW from the 2018 capacity of 64.9 GW, while the target for 2020 is to increase the capacity to 74.8 GW," said Arifin.

Arifin adds that in order to increase generation capacity, the government urges the completion of the 35 GW Program which mostly has finished construction.

Director General of Electricity, Rida Mulyana, says the 4.2 GW increase in 2019 is the highest power addition ever achieved.

"In terms of generation capacity, the 4.2 GW increase in 2019 is the highest capacity ever achieved from the generation side. Later, there will be an additional 50 GW," Rida stated.

Rida explains the 4.2 GW increase is due to the operation of 71 new power plants, 10 of which are Coal-fired Power Plants (PLTU) with a total capacity of approximately 3,017 MW.

"The achievement is something we should be proud of, and electricity supply to the public will naturally be more sufficient, so that in the future our focus for electricity procurement will no longer be on power generation," Rida concluded. (IY)
