Indonesia's Energy Security on the Rise

Indonesia's National Energy Council (DEN) states that assessment of the country's energy security came up with a "secure" result. DEN's Secretary General Djoko Siswanto shared this information in a discussion titled Great and Cool Stories about Energy in Jakarta on Thursday (16/7).

"Alhamdulillah, praise be to God, our condition (of energy security) is Secure (good). We scored 6.44," said Djoko.

The score is based on 4 main aspects, explained Djoksis--Djoko Siswanto's nickname, namely availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability. Additionally, the assessment considers the types of energy used by the public, infrastructure, level of energy utilization, and the environment.

Djoko said that the energy security index has been based on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). "There are several methods to calculate energy security index. We used the AHP with expert choice software which is based on inputs from the (energy) experts," detailed Djoko.

The index expresses scores 8-10 as very secure, scores 6-7.99 as secure, 4-5.99 fairly secure, 2-3.99 vulnerable, and 0-1.99 highly vulnerable.

The assessment shows that Indonesia's energy security index tends to improve and is moving towards very secure condition. "Year by year, our energy security score has improved, from 6.16 in 2015, 6.38 in 2016, 6.40 in 2017, and 6.44 in 2018," explained Djoko.

The assessment score can be made reference by the government to identify the direction of energy policy changes and what caused the various problems that have hampered the national energy supply, as well as to formulate measures to improve Indonesia's energy security and to realize the target set in the National Energy Policy (KEN).
