Re-Opening of Bromo Observation Post, Arcandra: Please Use the Post for Education Purposes

Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arcandra Tahar, hopes that the volcano observation posts belonging to the Center for Volcanology and Mitigation of Geological Hazards (PVMBG), Geological Agency, are used to not only monitor volcanic activities but also educate the public and tourists. Arcandra says this when he re-opens the Bromo observation post in Probolinggo, East Java, today, Thursday (17/10).

"This Bromo observation post is a state facility that can be used by the public to the maximum, to not only monitor volcanic activities but also educate the public and tourists. Please use it because every facility built by the state funds must be used as much as possible by Indonesians," said Arcandra.

Arcandra continues to say that the Ministry of EMR did not replace the existing monitoring tools because these tools can still function well; instead, the Ministry renovated the post so that the observers can provide better services.

"We did not replace the existing monitoring tools with the new ones because these tools can still function well, we have both analogue and digital tools which quality we've taken care of; what's new is the building so that our observers here can give even better services," Arcandra continued.

Since two years ago, the Ministry of EMR has allocated a part of its budget on the renovation of volcano observation posts to make them more comfortable in order to provide better services to the public. Of the 74 volcano posts belonging to the Ministry, 12 have been modernized this year, while 3 posts were renovated back in 2018.

"The renovation of the Bromo observation post is one of the efforts made by the government to improve the facility and infrastructure that support the mitigation of volcanic hazards. Currently, of the 69 Type A volcanos observed, 74 observation posts have been constructed," said Head of the Geological Agency, Rudy Suhendar.

A volcano observation post is vital in volcanic hazard mitigation, especially when the volcano is active. Considering the strategic position a volcano observation post holds, the Geological Agency through its PVMBG has revitalized observation posts in terms of both the building and monitoring tools. "The revitalization program of volcano observation posts has been proposed in the Government Development Plan (RJPMN) and is one of the National priorities," Rudy added.

"I hope the Bromo observation post can be made public facility in the field of volcanic hazard mitigation, for the general public, those working in education or tourism professionals working at Bromo," Rudy concluded. (SF)
