Minister Arifin: Prioritaskan EBT, Energi Harus Sokong Pertumbuhan Industri Daerah

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif ensures that the availability of energy in adequate amounts and competitive prices should be able to support the growth of regional industries. The reason is that energy is one of the vital components of an industry's production process.

"We have to support the economic growth, especially in the energy sector. The trick is how this energy can develop both large and small industries in the regions," confirmed Arifin before the participants of the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) between the National Government and the Indonesian Regional Leaders' Communication Forum (Forkopimda) at Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor Regency, West Java, Wednesday (13/11).

As development capital, Arifin continues, the development of the energy sector must give huge benefits to the people especially in terms of labor absorption. "The presence of energy can at least be enjoyed by a lot of people and will absorb many labors in all the regions passed through the development activities," he said.

The importance of the energy sector can be seen from the increasing demand for electricity annually. This is the main focus of Minister of EMR. "We've estimated that every year (additional) electricity demand will reach 5 thousand Megawatt (MW)," Arifin explained.

To illustrate, the electricity usage for the industrial sector until the third quarter of 2019 according to the State Electricity Company (PLN) data is 56.9 Terawatt Hour (TWh). The industry is the second largest segment to use PLN's electricity after the household.

To meet the increasing demand for electricity, Minister Arifin will constantly encourage the use of new, renewable energy. "(Electricity need) we'll give priority by using NRE resources," he concluded. (IY)
