Lighting Up 10 National Travel Destinations, Govt to Use Solar Power

Tourism is one of the sectors targeted to use new, renewable energy (NRE), especially solar energy, as its daily source of electricity. Such was expressed by Advisor to Minister of EMR on Environment and Spatial Layout, Saleh Abdurrahman, before Pejuang Surya (Solar Fighter) volunteers on Tuesday (12/11) in Jakarta.

Among the numerous travel destinations in Indonesia, Saleh explains at least 10 destinations are prioritized to use NRE as their main source of energy, namely:

1. Lake Toba

2. Belitung

3. Kepulauan Seribu

4. Tanjung Lesung

5. Borobudur

6. Bromo-Tengger-Semeru

7. Mandalika

8. Labuan Bajo

9. Wakatobi

10. Morotai (North Maluku)

"So these are the 10 destinations where we will maximize the use of PLTS, because these areas must use renewable energy as much as possible," said Saleh.

This measure is a small step in the realization of the big ideal of how to manage energy in an environmental friendly way. The government has set a target that in 2025 the use of NRE reaches 23% of total energy mix, where PLTS is projected to contribute 2,023.3 MW from cumulative RUPTL, Additional Target from SOE Synergy, Installation of Rooftop PLTS, and the use of State Budget (Ministry of EMR and other agencies).

To realize the 23% target of 2025, Saleh informs that Indonesia at least has more than 400 MTOE of energy supply, with more than 115 GW installed at power plants capable of generating 2,500 kWh per capita annually. By that time, Indonesia's electrification ratio will be 100%. "How can we reach the target, one way is through PLTS," Saleh explained.

According to the RUPTL, the use of PLTS is targeted to increase every year. PLTS is targeted to generate 126.8 MW in 2019, 553.6 MW in 2022, and 993.5 MW in 2025. Aside from the RUPTL, Saleh explains there is an energy market which may become potential PLTS users, such as Rooftop PLTS, smelter, or other industries. From this energy market, as much as 201 MW is expected to be generated in 2025.

The use of environmental friendly sources of energy is in line with the Paris Agreement signed on 22 April 2016 in Paris by Indonesia as represented by Minister for Environment and Forestry. "President Joko Widodo during the 21st COP conducted on 21 December 2016 also made his commitment to reduce emissions by 29% with our country's own efforts and by 41% with international support," said Saleh.(IY)
