Indonesian Govt is Committed to Low-Carbon Electricity

The Indonesian Government is committed to providing electricity access with good quality and affordable price while still giving close attention to the principles of equality, efficiency, and environmental impacts. Secretary of Directorate General of Electricity, Munir Ahmad, made the statement at the opening of the Indonesia-Japan Workshop on Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) System Integration, Hydrogen, and Low Carbon Technologies 2021, on Tuesday (12/1). The workshop is a collaboration between Directorate General of Electricity of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan.

"Until semester 1 of 2020, we've developed about 71 GW of electricity generation, 61,000 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission networks, 150,000 MVA of substations (GI), 995,000 ckm of distribution networks, and 61,000 ckm of distribution stations. The infrastructure had been developed so that everyone in Indonesia can enjoy electricity access with good quality and at affordable price," said Munir who represented Director General of Electricity.

Munir went on to explain that in the last six years, access to electricity has continued to improve. This is shown by a higher level of the national Electrification Ratio (ER), from 14.85% in 2014 to 99.20% according to the 2020 prognosis. The Indonesian Government has even set an electrification ratio target of 100% by the end of 2024. "Electricity use has continued to be promoted for productive activities that can turn the national economic wheel," said Munir.

The prognosis for national electricity consumption per capita in 2020 was 1,089 kWh, with the household sector utilizing 38% of the capacity, industrial sector 41%, bussiness sector 15%, and public sector 6%.

To minimize environmental impacts and maintain continuous balance in electricity supply and demand, the government is promoting the development of New, Renewable Energy-based power plants, the use of High Efficiency Low Emission (HELE) technologies at coal-fired power plants, the conversion to fuels with lower carbon content, and the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (KBLBB) and induction stoves.

The Indonesian Government has continued to make various efforts to implement recent technologies in clean energy massively at reasonable price. The use of hydrogen and Carbon Capture Storage (CCS)/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) has continued to be developed, while cooperation with various parties and investors has continued to be increased so that the latest technologies can be implemented at their economies of scale.
