Indonesia Underlines Online System Integration in G20 Meeting

Indonesia has been focusing on the integration of online systems in energy digitalization in terms of energy efficiency. To measure energy efficiency performance, Indonesia has started with services/commercial sector which contributes 45% to GDP and 6% to final energy consumption.

"The selection of efficient end-use equipment and demand side management have significantly influenced energy efficiency performance in Indonesia," said Head of Center for Data and Information Technology of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Agus Cahyono Adi in a G20 virtual meeting on Energy End-Use Data and Energy Efficiency Metrics Initiative organized by ADEME and International Energy Agency (IEA) on Thursday (29/10).

The Covid-19 pandemic is recognized to have changed people's daily behavior, for examply by promoting goods sales through e-commerce during February to April 2020. "The implementation of digitalization has certainly improved efficiency and productivity, and will become a new lifestyle," said Agus to 72 country representatives who attended the meeting.

This new, online digital habit and economic pressures have not only affected the energy consumption of the commercial sector but also changed the preference of the public and energy users in general for their choice of energy equipment. "The increase in online shopping in Indonesia will make it easier to collect data on the circulation of energy-efficient equipment," said Agus.

Agus said that Ministry of EMR had made concrete efforts to improve data management, such as development of an online reporting system on energy, system-to-system integration, and support for the use of big data by e-commerce, industry, and energy sectors. Big data help in analyzing energy use and identifying opportunities for energy efficiency. Using energy end-use surveys supervised by the IEA, it is easier to develop energy use indicators that will be used in preparing recommendations for energy efficiency measures and energy transition policies.

"This goal is in line with the focus of today's G20 meeting, namely 'Rethinking end use data collection in the light of the global health crisis' which impacts end-use data management which is vital in designing effective energy policies," Agus concluded. (IY)
