Indonesia Pays Close Attention to Good Mining Principles

God has gifted Indonesia with abundant natural resources. In using these natural resources, however, one must conserve the environment in accordance with good mining principles. This is very important, because according to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif, the costs arising from environmental destruction can never be compensated by the benefits obtained.

"I need to emphasize once again that in the Government's view, economic considerations and interests cannot be exchanged for environmental destruction or unsustainability of the functions of natural environment and social functions of the community," said Mr. Tasrif at the Awards Ceremony of Application of Good Technique Principles to Mineral and Coal Mining of 2020 on Tuesday (29/9).

Environmental management as well as the hopes and aspirations of the community for mining business activities must be in line with the efforts to protect the environment, and this has become a growing concern of the world community.

"The desire of the world community for more environmentally friendly energy management is in line with Indonesia's commitment to continue promoting the use of renewable energy to meet the 23% target in Indonesia's energy mix by 2025," continued Mr. Tasrif.

Particularly for coal, the Government still gives a significant portion of coal in the national energy mix while at the same time increases the use of renewable energy. This is certainly in line with the direction of national coal management policies, namely to prioritize domestic interests, optimize the use of low quality coal, and advance downstream processing which is the key to optimizing mining commodities.

"Therefore, efficient mining operations, high productivity, tolerable and acceptable safety risks will remain as key parameters in mining operations," concluded Mr. Tasrif. (IY)
