Indonesia, Denmark Extends Renewable Energy Partnership

Indonesia and Denmark have been carrying out strategic cooperation in the energy sector, including energy modelling, renewable energy integration, and energy efficiency since a Memorandum of Understanding on renewable energy was signed in 2015, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif has said.

To enhance the cooperation, Minister Arifin on Tuesday (24/11) discussed the Indonesia-Denmark Energy Partnership Programme (INDODEPP) with Danish Minister of Climate, Energy, and Public Utilities H.E. Dan Jorgensen in a virtual bilateral meeting. The two ministers also signed the Indonesia-Denmark Second Amendment Protocol on Renewable, Clean Energy and Energy Conservation to extend the previous MoU as well as to facilitate the INDODEPP activities and other energy cooperation in the future.

Minister Arifin went on to say that the Protocol signing shows the two countries' commitment to meeting the goal of the INDODEPP between 2020 and 2025, namely to supply Indonesia with sustainable energy. Such energy will also help Indonesia meet the targets of reduced carbon emissions in the UNFCCC's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), affordable and clean energy in the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), climate action in the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13), and 23% renewable energy mix by 2025.

Meanwhile, Danish Minister Jorgensen said that the Indonesia- Denmark cooperation will set an example of how to increase renewable energy while reducing dependency on coal. Minister Jorgensen added that the two countries have taken a joint effort to fight the climate crisis.

The INDODEPP is specifically made up of three key projects:

  • Scenario-based long-term energy plans and regulation, namely Modelling Capacity, Energy Policy and Planning, and Regulation.
  • Integration of renewable energy, that is, Wind Power Pilot Tender, Energy Forecasting and System Operation, and Least-cost Grid Integration Strategies and Planning.
  • Enhanced national strategy for energy efficiency, specifically Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Energy Efficiency in Industry and Power Plants.

To follow up the ministerial meeting, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of Ministry of EMR will chair a Mini-steering Committee Meeting to discuss the subject matters to be covered by the INDODEPP 2020-2025, implementing agreements of the INDODEPP 2020-2025 to follow up the MoU signed by the ministers, and signing of a Non-Disclosure Agreement between Danish Energy Agency and Indonesia's State Electricity Company PT PLN (Persero).
