Govt Committed to Safeguarding Transition to Clean Energy

The government is committed to maintaining sustainability in energy use. In the electricity subsector, the government has continued to promote an increased use of renewable energy, such as through issuance of regulation on electricity prices from renewable energy. This was expressed by Director General of Electricity of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Rida Mulyana, in a series of event to celebrate National Electricity Day under the title of Energy, Sustainability, and Society Summit held online on Tuesday (27/10).

"One of the principles adopted by the government in energy development is sustainability," said Rida.

Rida explained, in addition to the sustainability principle, the government had applied the 5K standards in energy development. The first K is availability (ketersediaan), while the second K is quality (kualitas) of electricity.

"If supply is enough but power outages are intermittent, that's not good; the government must ensure that people enjoy good quality electricity," he explained.

The next K, continued Rida, is affordability (keterjangkauan), which means that all elements of the society can afford energy prices. The fourth K is sustainability (keberlanjutan) and the last K is equity (keadilan), which means that every one throughout Indonesia can enjoy electricity.

To accelerate energy transition, Rida said that the government would soon issue regulations on new and renewable energy tariffs. "We will issue a presidential regulation for renewable energy tariffs that will be purchased by PLN and which we hope will increase the use of renewables in Indonesia," he said.

On the same occasion, President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Zulkifli Zaini said that to support the government's efforts in the energy transition to renewable energy, PT PLN (Persero) had created three programs aimed at accelerating the development of renewables in Indonesia.

"The first program is to develop 5 GW of renewables in PLN's long-term plan, as set out in our RUPTL (electricity supply business plan), while the second is the Green Booster program of 3.5 GW," he explained.

The Green Booster program includes innovations in renewables development such as co-firing, development of solar PV on ex-mines, and utilization of existing reservoirs belonging to Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

The third program is large scale renewables. PT PLN will develop large-scale renewables power plants to improve the economy through the construction of hydropower plants for industry.

"We hope that the various innovations introduced by PLN can inspire us all to come up with other innovations and seek alternatives to develop renewables at a lower cost but with high reliability," Zulkifli concluded.

Ministry of EMR holds various events to celebrate the National Electricity Day (HLN) of 2020, including Energy Suistanability Society Summit on 27 October. Next, on November 3, there will be the operational launch of Battery Swapping Station for Electric Vehicles (SPBKLU) and the presentation of Electricity Safety Award (K2) scheduled to be attended by Minister of EMR Arifin Tasrif.
