Energy Minister Spells out Policy Priorities for 2021

There are several priority programs and activities of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in 2021, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif has said at the press conference on Performance Report of 2020 and Work Program for 2021 of the EMR Sector in Jakarta on Thursday (7/1). These programs and activities will be carried out Quickly, Carefully, and Professionally, added the Minister.

In the mineral and coal subsector, the Ministry will speed up smelter construction process, formulate the policies on accelerated increase in coal added value and domestic demand fulfillment, implement the Increase in the Use of Local Goods (P3DN) and the increase in the Share of Local Components (TKDN) in the mineral and coal subsector, and require the monitoring and assessment of reclamation and post-mining actitivies with remote sensing technologies.

In the electricity and the New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation subsectors, the Indonesian Government will focus on the construction of infrastructure for power plants of 27,000 Megawatt (MW), transmission 19,000 kilometers, substations 38,000 MW, and the smart grid development. "In the transportation sector, we encourage the use of battery electric vehicles," said Arifin.

The Ministry has also prepared the conversion of oil-fired power plants to natural gas or renewables, installation of 22,000 solar-powered street lighting (PJU), revitalization of renewables power plants, construction of solar photovoltaic power systems to support state ministries/agencies, and distribution of 43,192 units of electricity storage device. "To support the agriculture and fishery sectors, we'll build rooftop solar power systems and ground mount power systems to power cold storage," Arifin explained.

In the geology subsector, modernization of geological disaster mitigation equipment is a top priority. Lower priorities will be given to the development of geological information centers/geological heritage, development of volcano observatories, monitoring networks for basin-based groundwater, surveys of geothermal resource and reserve prospect, and collection of oil and gas data and information or oil and gas surveys.

Additionally, the Ministry of EMR will carry out supporting programs such as trials at green diesel and bioavtur demo plant, preparation of renewables (wind, hydro, and biomass) potential and Ocean Current Energy maps, research on the increase of coal added value, improvement of Civil Servant competence, industrial trainings in the EMR sector, and evaluation on the Indonesia National Energy Master Plan.
