Energy Minister Receives Distinguished Honorary Fellow from ASEAN Engineering Federation

The ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations awarded Distinguished Honorary Fellow to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif. The award was handed out by a representative from the Evaluation Panel, Board of Industrial Engineering Chapter of Institute of Indonesian Engineers (BKTI-PII) on Monday (28/12).

"I'd like to express my highest appreciation to the PII. It's a great honor for me and I hope the award will also encourage other people to commit themselves to their professions," said Minister Arifin after the awarding ceremony.

According to Arifin, human resource is important because qualified human resource gets a lot of work done. The PII must be able to encourage new cadre to develop themselves and do research that produces innovative technologies, especially in the energy sector.

"We have to continuously develop our human resource. We will encourage our university graduates to pursue higher education to a master's or doctorate level," continued Arifin.

Arifin went on to say that Indonesia can be self-reliant in energy because the country has a variety of energy sources that can be used for the benefit of the nation and state.

"We have quite intense sunshine, abundant geothermal sources, substantial hydro energy, and large amounts of fossil energy sources. The question is how we can use these sources optimally to ensure the energy is sustainable for a long period," explained Arifin.

The Ministry of EMR, continued Arifin, is formulating an energy strategy so that in the future, Indonesia can meet the world's commitment to producing clean and more environmentally friendly energy.

The ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) is a non-govermental body. Its members are engineering institutions and organisations of ten ASEAN countries. Indonesia is represented by Institute of Indonesian Engineers (PII).

Meanwhile, the AFEO Distinguished Honorary Fellow is awarded to Deputy/Vice Presidents of a country, Deputy Prime Minister, Heads of Ministry and very prominent persons in high position and rank, and world-renowned figures who have rendered very substantial and outstanding services to the engineering profession, the institution and/or the ASEAN Nation.

For the record, Minister Arifin Tasrif studied chemical engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), graduating in 1977. (IY)
