Indonesia's Installed Capacity at 71 GW in June 2020

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif said that the installed capacity of Indonesia's power plants until June 2020 reached 71 Giga Watt (GW). This is an increase of 1.3 GW on top of last year's total of 69.7 GW. Since 2018, the development of power plants in Indonesia has been focused on new and renewable energy-based plants.

"The trend in national power plants is that, from 2018 to June 2020, development has been focused on renewable energy plants, such as wind and solar PV plants, while adoption of Clean Coal Technology (CCT) at coal-fired power plants (PLTU) has continued to be done," Arifin explained at PLN's International Conference on Technology and Policy in Electric Power and Energy (ICT-PEP) 2020 held on Wednesday (23/9).

Based on verified data, until June 2020, the installed capacity of coal-fired power plants is 35,220 MW, gas/gas and steam/gas engine power plants 20,537 MW, hydro/mini hydro/micro hydro 6,096 MW, diesel 4,781 MW, geothermal 2,131 MW, and other renewables power plants 2,200 MW. Renewables power plants make up 14.69% or 10,467 Mega Watts (MW) of the total installed capacity.

According to the regional power grid, the increase in installed capacity is as follows: Sumatra increases to 14.7 GW from previously 14.3 GW, Kalimantan increases to 4.4 GW from previously 4.0 GW, Sulawesi is constant at 5.6 GW, Maluku-Papua increases to 1.5 GW from previously 1.4 GW, and Java-Bali-Nusa Tenggara increases to 44.8 GW from previously 44.4 GW.

In terms of ownership of total installed capacity, PLN still holds the largest share at 43,047 MW or 60.7%, Independent Power Producers (IPP) at 18,816 MW or 26.5%, Operation Permit at 5,645 MW or 7.7%, Public Private Utility at 3,583 MW or 5%, and Government at 55 MW or 0.1%.

This is the second time PLN has held an international conference. The conference's theme is "Making Indonesia 4.0 through Development of National Green Energy Resources". It is a useful forum for discussion, innovation, and dissemination of the latest research results of the world's electricity business. (IY)
