Promoting Partnership with Nepal and Madagascar, Indonesia Again Holds SSTC Renewable Energy Training

To promote cooperation in the development of new and renewable energy with friendly countries, the Indonesian government through the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) again hold a capacity building training with Madagascar and Nepal. The training titled "Training on Rural Electrification through Micro Hydro, Solar PV, and Waste-to Energy" is one of the outputs of the South-South Triangular Cooperation on Renewable Energy (SSTC RE) platform.

"Efforts to develop and utilize renewable energy require the implementation of appropriate regulations and action plans as well as increased capacity of human resources," said Head of the Center for Human Resources Development on Electricity; New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (PPSDM KEBTKE) of the Ministry of EMR, Laode Sulaiman, at the training opening on Tuesday (2/10).

Additionally, Laode continued, the efforts needed collaboration between stakeholders and harmonization of upstream and downstream policies. "The PPSDM KEBTKE is committed to supporting and building human resource competencies in the renewable energy subsector, especially in solar power plants, small-scale hydroelectric power plants, and waste management," said Laode.

SSTC on Renewable Energy is an inter-country partnership forum on renewable energy that will be carried out continuously from 2021 to 2023. The November training is the second of its kind and is the flagship of the South-South Cooperation program in Indonesia. This partnership has been implemented with the funding support from the Indonesian-German project on the Strengthening Capacities for Policy Planning for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Indonesia and in the Global South (SDGs SSTC).

"This partnership contains the spirit of 'Leaving No One Behind'. In this second training, we receive participation from the private and education sectors, while the number of female participants increases to 39%," explained Jasper Haerig, Coordinator of the Rural Electrification Component of PERER, GIZ Madagascar.

In the training, participants will learn about the planning and development of renewable energy, especially solar power plants, small-scale hydroelectric power plants, and waste-to-energy management in Indonesia. They will also discuss the application of renewable energy and the challenges faced in their respective countries. The training features Tri Mumpuni, an awardee of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award of 2011, as a facilitator. Other facilitators come from PT Gerbang Multindo Nusantara and the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Bandung Institute of Technology.

With global energy consumption on the increase, the potential of renewable energy has become a topic of interest for many Global South countries including Indonesia, Madagascar and Nepal. The training will be held virtually for three days from November 2 to 4, 2021, and attended by 33 participants, namely 10 participants from Indonesia, 12 from Madagascar, and 11 from Nepal. (IY)
