Prof Dr. Subroto Passed Away on 20th December 2022

The extended family of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is grieving for the loss of a wonderful figure who had dedicated his life for the development of energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Subroto. The former Minister of Mining and Energy for two periods passed away at the age of 99 in Jakarta, Tuesday 20th December 2022 at around 4.25 p.m. Indonesian Time, after previously undergoing an intensive treatment at the Sulianti Saroso Hospital, Jakarta.

He will be laid to rest at Bimasena up to tomorrow morning, Wednesday 21st December 2022, then will be laid to rest at the Chairul Saleh Building of the Secretariat General office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and eventually buried in Taman Makam Pahlawan Kalibata in the same day at 3.30 p.m.

Prof. Dr. Subroto was born in Solo, Central Java on 19th September 1923. After graduating from the Military Academy in Jogjakarta in 1948, he completed his Master of Arts from McGill University, Canada, in 1956, obtained his Doctoral degree from the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia in 1958 and received the title of Professor from the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia in 1965. He also obtained an Honoris Causa Doctorate in Law from the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Alaska, USA.

Prior to serving as the Minister of Mining and Energy, he served as the Minister of Transmigration and Cooperatives from 1971 - 1973 as well as the Minister of Manpower, Transmigration and Cooperatives from 1973 - 1978. He also served as the Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1988 - 1994.

He is globally known as The Wise Minister Subroto from Indonesia. The nickname was given due to his wisdom and prudent vision in oil management among OPEC countries. He also had remarkable diplomacy and negotiation skill to suppress disputes among OPEC countries when serving as the President of the Conference (1985) and Secretary General in 1988-1994.

Prof. Dr. Subroto was also a Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, and was also listed as one of the figures participated in designing the blueprint for Indonesia's economic development. Together with Prof. Dr. Widjojo Nitisastro, Prof. Dr. Emil Salim, Prof. Dr. Moh. Sadli, and Prof. Dr. Ali Wardhana, he was also the member of the Economic Team for Indonesia's development in the early New Order era.

He was the Founder and the Chairman of BIMASENA, Mining and Energy Society Association, Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Institute of Energy Economics (IIEE), Advisory Board of PT Medco Energi Internasional, Tbk., Board of Commissioners of PT Bank DBS Indonesia, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Bangun Foundation Bina Anak Indonesia, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Mining and Minerals Research Institute (IMMRI), Chairman of the Supervisory Board for the Military Academy Family Association (IKAM), and ASPERMIGAS Advisory Board.

Since 2017, the highest award in the energy and mineral resources sector, called as Subroto Award has been dedicated for his extraordinary contribution in the mining and energy sector. The award is given to stakeholders contributing in advancing the energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia.

These were awards received by Prof. Dr. Subroto:

  • "Satyalancana Peristiwa Perang Kemerdekaan Pertama" from Minister of Defense in 1958;
  • Heroes Award from the President in 1959;
  • "Kartika Eka Paksi" Award from the President in 1972;
  • "Satyalancana Penegak" Award from Minister of Defense in 1972;
  • "Bintang Republik Indonesia" and "Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana" Award from the President in 1973;
  • "Satyalancana Dwidya Sistha" Award from Minister of Defense in 1982;
  • Independence Veteran Honorary Award from Minister of Defense in 1987;
  • "Satyalancana Dwidya Sistha" Award from Minister of Defense in 1989;
  • Award for Lifetime Service in the Energy sector from Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) in 2014;
  • Wirakarya Adhitama Award from Faculty of Economy and Business University of Indonesia in 2015;
  • Industry Pioneer Award from the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) in 2018;
  • Katadata Lifetime Award in 2018;
  • Herman Johannes Award from the Alumni of the Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University in 2018;
  • Cultural Masterpiece World Record Award of "Empu Minyak dan Energi Indonesia" from MURI in 2018.
