Prior to Nuclear Power Plant Construction, Energy Ministry Completes Marine Geology Survey in West Kalimantan

The Marine Geology Research and Development Center (P3GL) of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) completed a marine geology survey on a prospective nuclear power plant site on the coast of West Kalimantan Province on Monday (31/5). Known as recognize survey, this activity is a preliminary to a marine geological survey cooperation contract between the Ministry of EMR and the Center for Nuclear Energy System Studies of Indonesia National Nuclear Energy Agency (PKSEN Batan).

The recognize survey took place on May 25--31, 2021. The P3GL team also coordinated with the local governments to prepare facilities and infrastructure at the survey site.

"This coordination is the first step towards the full marine geological survey which will be carried out in mid-June 2021," Coordinator of Marine Energy and Region Research and Development Group (KP3 EKDK) of P3GL, Purnomo Raharjo, said at the survey location.

Preparation of the survey mapping involved several entities, namely the Research and Development Agency of West Kalimantan Provincial Government, Tanjungpura University, the Marine and Fisheries Service Office of West Kalimantan Province, the Indonesian Diving Sports Association (POSSI), and local fishermen.

"We gave information about the survey scope, which includes field data collection, analysis of geophysical, geological, oceanographic, and environmental data, and marine geohazards," said Purnomo.

The P3GL team also paid a visit to the Singkawang City administration to submit survey implementation plan, survey site review plan, and field survey schedule.

"I hope this national program can advance people's lives, especially by providing electricity access," said Acting Assistant Mayor of Singkawang, Dwi Satrio Sepriyanto.

The Marine and Fisheries Service Office of West Kalimantan had given its committment to finding an appropriate survey vessel, which will also be used to install survey equipment at sea.

The P3GL team had tested the ability of the survey vessel. The team went to the potential locations for equipment placement with the PKSEN BATAN team, the Marine and Fisheries Service Office team, the POSSI diving team, and local fishermen. The trials were carried out in the waters of Sungai Raya-Bengkayang. The equipment to be installed includes current meters, wave riders, and tide gauges. The team will also make a platform to place the equipment and orient the boundaries of the survey area.

The marine geological survey is the first phase before nuclear power plant construction in West Kalimantan. The scope of the survey is analysis of geophysical, geological, oceanographic, environmental, and geohazard data. Survey activities include measuring of seabed morphology, coastal characteristics, sea water quality, marine sediment quality, and marine geohazards. (IY)
