PLTU Sumsel 8 Adopts Flue Gas Desulfurization to Curb Emission

The construction of South Sumatra coal-fired power plant 8 (PLTU Sumsel 8) at Muara Enim, South Sumatra Province, is targeted for completion in March 2022. The largest mine-mouth power plant in Southeast Asia will have a capacity of 2x660 Mega Watt (MW), and has currently progressed by 92.84 percent.

"We've just received a report that it's been progressing by over 92 percent. Hopefully everything runs according to targets and the power plant can benefit the local communities as well as strengthen the Sumatra electricity grid," said Head of Bureau of Communication, Public Information Services, and Cooperation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Agung Pribadi, in Jakarta on Tuesday (16/11).

To help reach net zero emission goal, the power plant will use supercritical technology, which is an environmentally friendly technology. To curb its exhaust gas emissions, PLTU Sumsel 8 will adopt flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technology that minimizes sulfur dioxide from exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants, said Gusti Anggara, Deputy General Manager of Huadian Bukit Asam Power (HBAP), the consortium that builds PLTU Sumsel 8, at the project site on Tuesday (16/11).

Gusti went on to explain that FGD is a process where flue gases from coal burning are mixed with a binder, in this case wet lime (calcium carbonate, CaCO3), so that flue gases have a low content of sulfur dioxide when released into the atmosphere.

For the record, PLTU Sumsel 8 is part of the 35,000 MW program. The power plant is developed by state coal miner PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) via PT HBAP as Independent Power Producer (IPP). PT HBAP itself is a consortium between PTBA and China Huadian Hongkong Company Ltd. "The power plant will need about 5 million metric tons of coal annually which will be supplied from Bangko mining business license (IUP), of PTBA's Tanjung Enim mining area," Gusti concluded. (IY)
