Over 100 Thousand Customers in East Nusa Tenggara Have Power Again

Over a hundred thousand people in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) again have power after widespread power blackouts caused by Seroja tropical cyclone.

A total of 100,933 customers of PLN have had power again, said Head of Bureau of Communication, Public Information Service, and Cooperation of Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Agung Pribadi. "The most important issue is how to meet the electricity need of the people. We'd like to appreciate PLN for its efforts to accelerate the recovery process," said Agung in Jakarta on Wednesday (7/4).

The state power company PLN reported that until Tuesday (6/4), 786 substations have been operational. "As of today, PLN deploys 413 personnel to repair 315 substations across NTT," said PLN's General Manager for NTT, Agustinus Jatmiko.

Jatmiko further explained that PLN had to turn off power in flooded areas for people's safety. "PLN gives priority to people's safety in power recovery process. If an area is still flooded, PLN has to put off the power temporarily and put it back to normal once the waters subside," he said.

Many districts have been affected by the cyclone, including Adonara, Lembata, East Sumba, Kupang, Ende, Ngada, Manggarai, Malaka, Rote, Sabu, and West Sumba. Special in Kupang City, power has been gradually back to normal. "In the remaining areas, we'll turn on the power gradually after we've completed cleaning up fallen trees and repairing power networks," said Jatmiko.

Ministry of EMR has continuously requested the public to stay alert to electrical hazards. Those wishing to get information about power services can contact PLN call center 123 or through mobile application New PLN Mobile.

As many as 3,983 distribution substations across Kupang, Western Flores, Eastern Flores, and Sumba were flooded when tropical cylone Seroja hit Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara. The cyclone brought heavy rain and strong wind that caused high tide, floods, and landslides. Over 100 people were killed and dozens more are still missing. (IY)
