Indonesia to Host Seventh Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

Indonesia will host the Seventh Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) on May 23-28, 2022 in Bali.

At the Ministerial Meeting in preparation for the GPDRR held on Friday (28/1), the Head of the Geological Agency, Eko Budi Lelono, stated that the international forum aims to monitor, evaluate, as well as collect new trends in disaster management, which will be used as the basis for preparing disaster management action plans for the next two years. "This forum will become an important means of preparing disaster mitigation policies," explained Eko.

Besides being a forum for disaster risk reduction, the GDRR is an opportunity to promote Indonesia's tourism to the international world amid the Covid-19 pandemic. "Including to promote the practice and experience of disaster management that Indonesia has performed," Eko added.

An agreement was reached during the preparatory meeting to hold the forum through a strict face-to-face meeting and a bubble system since delegates enter Indonesia.

There are 8 agenda items and actual issues discussed during the preparatory meeting, namely: (1) contribution budget and HCA; (2) the format of VVIP activities and attendance; (3) visa and quarantine; (4) media and public relations; (5) the role of the President of the Republic of Indonesia; (6) venue readiness; (7) companion programs and supporting events; (8) VVIP security, delegation and disaster preparedness.

For the record, the GPDRR is the world's foremost gathering on reducing disaster risk and building the resilience of communities and nations. It takes place every two years.

The GPDRR 2022 will be attended by President Joko Widodo, the UN secretary-general, several elected heads of nations, and representatives from 193 member countries with the number of participants estimated at 5,000 people. The Indonesian government has shown its commitment to the forum by the issuance of Presidential Decree Number 20 of 2021 on the National Committee for Organizing the Seventh Session of the GPDRR in 2022.
