Indonesia is Committed to Net Zero Emission, Says Energy Minister

The Indonesian government is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as set out in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Arifin Tasrif, has said when receiving the visit of His Excellency Alok Sharma, President Designate of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26) and Mr. Owen Jenkins, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Indonesia and Timor Leste on Monday (31/5). This visit aims to support the EMR sector in reaching Indonesia's net zero emission goal.

To support the realization of net zero emission, Arifin said the Ministry of EMR has prepared a number of strategies, such as mandatory biodiesel, co-firing of coal-fired power plants, utilization of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), replacement of diesel power plants with renewable energy power plants including those of bio-based, non-electric/non-biufuel utilization such as briquettes, drying of agricultural products, and biogas.

Currently, the Ministry of EMR together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry are preparing Indonesia's net zero emission commitment, especially the emission reduction program in the electricity generation subsector.

"The program will be implemented, among others, by terminating the operation of coal-fired power plants by 53 GW between 2025--2045," said Minister Arifin.

Mr. Alok Sharma appreciates the initiative of Ministry of EMR in supporting the realization of the net zero emission target, and hopes that the Government of Indonesia can officially announce its net zero emission commitment soon.

For the record, the Indonesian government is preparing a Grand Energy Strategy to develop the energy sector so as to meet the ideal targets in terms of energy security, energy mix, and emission reduction.

The Grand Strategy consists of plans to meet national energy demand, improve trade balance, and develop energy infrastructure. One of the targets is to accelerate the use of renewable energy power plants with an additional capacity of around 38 GW by 2035. The use of solar PV is prioritized because its investment cost is relatively lower and the installation time is short.

Besides the Ministry of EMR, the President Designate of COP26 will also make a number of visits to other relevant ministers while in Indonesia, in preparation for the COP26 in Glassgow which will be held at the end of 2021. (IY)
