Essay on Potential for Geothermal Fluid Lithium Won Energy Minister Cup

The work by Aditya Yuda Kencana, a student of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), titled "Lithium: A Hidden Gem from Geothermal Energy in Indonesia", won the New, Renewable Energy Essay Competition held by Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Society of Renewable Energy (SRE), and daily newspaper Rakyat Merdeka.

The awarding ceremony was held virtually on Thursday (20/5) evening, to coincide with the commemoration of the National Awakening Day.

In his welcome remarks, Minister of EMR Arifin Tasrif said the competition helped encourage the younger generation to contribute to developing renewables in Indonesia. "The young generation has shown extraordinary enthusiasm in responding to local (energy) issue which is also a global issue. The competition has proved positive to encourage the contribution of Indonesian youth in developing renewables in Indonesia," Arifin said.

The ideas put forward by the students, continued Arifin, should be materialized while still prioritizing innovation and technology. "I think these excellent works should be followed up. They should not stop here, but instead these works must be continued so that they can benefit the public," added Arifin.

According to Arifin, energy transition has become a must for any countries. "Renewables, energy efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions cannot be treated as temporary efforts. It takes commitment and sustainability to handle these issues. The government cannot deal with these alone, and joint efforts are needed, including those by the younger generation," said Arifin.

Public policy observer Agus Pambagio, who was one of the judges, said that Aditya's work is in line with the theme of competition and the real conditions on field. Aditya focused on the large potential of geothermal fluid in Indonesia which can be extracted into lithium, the main component in the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries. "We hope this study can make Indonesia excel in various aspects such as electric vehicles and others," said Agus.
