Energy Ministry: Saving Energy is Easier than Constructing Power Plants

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) will intensively encourage energy saving behaviors of the younger generation, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (NREEC) of the Ministry of EMR, Dadan Kusdiana, has said at the opening of SDG Talks: Save Energy, Stay Eco Friendly held in Jakarta on Friday (6/4).

"It's easier to save energy than to build a power plant," Dadan continued during the webinar which was organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Indonesia.

Dadan expected energy-saving culture to grow and take root among students. Thus, students can be at the forefront to become ambassadors and business players of energy conservation.

According to Dadan, energy conservation can be a new business field for Indonesian millennials. Moreover, environmental and clean energy issues have become popular topics in the global community. This is marked by the rise of startups that offer energy savings, to both households and commercial buildings. "The approach is carried out through modern science that is studied, understood, and mastered by the youth," Dadan explained.

The development of clean energy startup businesses in the world opens up opportunities for millennials to contribute to the new, renewable energy subsector. "It's time for the younger generation to start contributing to the NRE development. I hope you will start to enter (business)," said Dadan.

The government is formulating a new policy in the form of a government regulation on energy conservation to create market share in Indonesia. "In Indonesia, the potential for energy saving is still huge, so the market potential for Energy Services Company (ESCO) is enormous," said Dadan.

According to Dadan, the development of the NRE business among students is a strategic step. For this reason, the government is disseminating information to various campuses. "This is a strategic step for the younger generation to open the (NRE) market," said Dadan.

The Ministry of EMR will continue to facilitate various entities wishing to start any NRE businesses so that the NRE mix can be developed jointly. "It is impossible for the government to handle all aspects. Everyone must jointly develop the market, develop the industry," Dadan concluded. (IY)
