Energy Ministry Adopts Three Strategies to Ensure Stable Electricity Supply during PON XX Papua

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) supports the 20th National Games (PON XX) by ensuring the electricity supply in Papua is reliable. Director of Electrical Engineering and Environment of the Ministry of EMR, Wanhar, said the Ministry employed three strategies to ensure the reliable supply of electricity during PON XX.

"During PON XX, the (event) operations are secured by Zero Down Time (ZDT). This means reliable electricity supply is highly maintained to prevent power outage," Wanhar explained the first strategy on Friday (1/10) in Jakarta.

Wanhar went on to explain that ZDT was done with a switching system of electricity supply which is equipped with Automatic Changeover Switch (ACOS) and by placing layered backup which consists of at least two layers of backup supply, namely Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and mobile generators. The method had successfully been tested/simulated.

The second strategy is to build electricity infrastructure on a budget of Rp308.8 billion, which work has been done since 2020.

Wanhar continued by referring to the third strategy, that is, PT PLN (Persero) has proactively disseminated a Multipurpose New Installation policy. "The Multipurpose New Installation is of a temporary nature, to meet the needs of games venues and supporting facilities/non-hotel accommodation," said Wanhar. He said the power addition could be fulfilled immediately before PON XX started.

Wanhar also said Directorate General of Electricity and PT PLN (Persero) held a coordination meeting on September 28th, 2021, to discuss the latest status and ensure that the electricity supply of PON XX in Papua was ready and reliable.

"During the meeting, PLN said they were 100% ready to supply electric power to all venues and other strategic places, and they had directly coordinated with the National PON Committee about it," he said.

To support PON XX in Papua, Directorate General of Electricity and PT PLN (Persero) also formed a Command Team on PON XX Electricity Supply Monitoring, which works from D-1 to D+1 of the National Games.

"According to the report of Shift 1 of the Command Team, on October 1st, 2021 until 1 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), there was no disturbance to system/subsystem that caused blackouts at PON venues," said Wanhar.

Wanhar then explained that Jayapura System had a supply capacity of 126.40 MW (30.13 MW of reserve or 23.8%), Timika System 38.50 MW (10.08 MW of reserve or 26.18%), and Merauke System 48.51 MW (25.71 MW of reserve or 52.99%).

"The status of all three systems is normal," said Wanhar.

To ensure reliable supply of electricity for PON XX Papua, a total of 1,574 personnel have been assigned from September 18th until October 15th, 2021 at four cities/regencies, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Merauke Regency, and Timika Regency. (IY)
