Energy Minister Launches "Geologi Indonesia" Portal

To facilitate and speed up geological information services to the public and stakeholders, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) launched the "Geologi Indonesia" (Indonesian geology) portal.

"The developments in technology and information have facilitated the digitalization of quality public services. The "Geologi Indonesia" portal forms part of the transformation of public services in providing information on stratigraphic lexicon, sedimentary basins, geological heritage, and maps throughout Indonesia," said the Minister of EMR, Arifin Tasrif, during the launching on Friday (28/1).

Arifin went on to say that the Ministry of EMR has the mandate to ensure the availability of energy and mineral resources for national development. In addition, the Ministry of EMR through its Geological Agency has a duty to provide geological and geophysical survey data and information services, as well as conduct investigations and mapping to produce data, information, and maps in various themes and scales. The role of public services is increasingly important in supporting the massive development of national infrastructure currently being carried out.

"For example, geological-based spatial planning could reduce risks due to geological hazards," explained Arifin.

Deputy Chair of the Commission VII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), Maman Abdurrahman, who was present at the launching, appreciated the efforts made by the Geological Agency to facilitate public access to geological information.

"As the Leadership of the Commission VII of the DPR RI, I really appreciate the modernization efforts carried out by the Geological Agency, in this case, in designing a portal for Indonesian geology. For me, this is a positive step to enter a new chapter or era after the pandemic," said Maman.

According to Maman, after the pandemic, personal and institutional behavior has shifted and changed very significantly.

"The geological portal is a form of shift or adaptation to the challenges of the times, which I think we should respond positively," said Maman.

Maman also asked the Geological Agency to continue to evaluate and improve the quality of data and information of the portal because the portal should facilitate geological stakeholders to access all geological information in Indonesia.

"For this reason, I think the portal should be continuously improved and evaluated because future challenges, problems, and needs will rise," Maman concluded.

For the record, the Center for Geological Survey of the Geological Agency has conducted geological and geophysical surveys, investigations, and mappings throughout Indonesia, and summarized all information in an Indonesian geological database. The database contains numerous geological base data, thousands of publications, and 4,756 geological and geophysical maps in various themes and scales.

These products can be physically accessed by the public at the Library of the Center for Geological Survey. The library houses geological data and information collected since the Dutch colonial era.

The "Geologi Indonesia" portal is organized into Stratigraphic Lexicon, Geo Map, Geo Heritage (geological heritage), and Sedimentary Basin. The Stratigraphic Lexicon presents the base data of 1,856 lithostratigraphic units throughout Indonesia from published geological maps. To get the distribution of these lithostratigraphic units in a geospatial view, please open the Geo Map. The Geo Map provides maps not only in raster format but also in vector format, and these are downloadable. To access the "Geologi Indonesia" portal, please visit https://geologi.esdm.go.id/geolindo.
