Energy Ministry to Prepare LED Development Roadmap

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) through its two units, Center for Research and Development of Electricity, New Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation Technologies (P3TKEBTKE), and Directorate of Energy Conservation, is preparing an LED Development Roadmap through a series of activities titled Advancing Indonesia's Lighting Market to High Efficient Technologies (ADLIGHT). The ADLIGHT program results from a collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

The roadmap will be prepared in seven months, until November 2021. Activities to be conducted include surveys to domestic LED industry, focus group discussions with industry, state ministries, and policy-making institutions; preparation of system dynamics models, formulation of roadmap concepts, workshops, and dissemination.

The surveys will be conducted for one month until early July 2021 through online questionnaires, interviews, and factory visits. A total of 41 industries will be surveyed, which are spread over seven provinces, namely Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, North Sumatra, and Batam.

Head of P3TKEBTKE, Haryanto, said that the roadmap would observe the condition of the domestic LED lighting industry. The roadmap is expected to become a reference in LED lamps development and to encourage better energy efficiency in lighting.

"The P3TKEBTKE team will observe technology production, the number and types of LED on the market, market conditions, and challenges faced, with the final target of providing policy intervention recommendations," said Haryanto when sending the team to conduct an initial survey to an LED factory in Tangerang (8 /6).

The ADLIGHT project is designed to promote widespread adoption of high-efficiency lighting technology by transforming the national market with the aim of reducing electricity consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This goal can be achieved by strengthening the domestic lighting industry so that it can produce high quality energy-saving lamps and encouraging the growth of domestic EEL (Energy Efficient Lighting) industry.

In 2019, the LED lighting market grew rapidly with sales of over 343 million units and is predicted to continue growing to one billion units by 2030. Unfortunately, more than 110 million or around 30 percent of units sold are imported.

Compared to Compacted Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) or self-ballasted lamps, LED lamps have several advantages, namely they are more efficient, have longer service life and better color rendering, and do not contain harmful mercury.

The efficiency of LED lamps is 25% to 75% higher, while their lighting resistance is better even after 4,000 hours of use. Therefore, the use of LEDs will increase energy efficiency, reduce electricity bills, and lower emissions in the power sector. (IY)
