Supporting Electricity Needs of New Capital, Govt Prepares Additional 844 MW

Ministry of Energy and Mineral (EMR) is currently preparing the energy supplies related to the plan to move the capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, for example the electricity supply to support the running of the government and the economy in the future.

Minister of EMR Arifin Tasrif estimates an addition of about 1,555 Mega Watt (MW) needed by the new capital in 2024. The figures are obtained on the assumption that there will be a population hike of around 1.5 million people who will consume approximately 4,000 kilo Watt hour (kWh) of electricity.

"If (we consider) reserve margin is 30%, it is projected an additional 1,555 MW of electricity is needed," explained Arifin before members of Commission VII of House of Representatives at the Work Meeting at Nusantara Building, Jakarta, Wednesday (27/11).

In addition to population migration and electricity consumption, the government also considers electricity need of 6,000 Giga Watt hour (GWh), power loss 10%, load factor 63%, and electricity production 6,600 GWh, so total peak load is assumed at 1,196 MW.

"According to the Electricity Procurement Plan (RUPTL) of 2024, additional supply to East Kalimantan is 691 MW so we still need an extra 884 MW," continued Arifin.

Currently, the electricity system in the capital to-be is connected to the Kalimantan interconnection grid, which net capacity power 1,596 MW, peak load 1,094 MW, and reserve margin 474.2 MW or 30%.

Meanwhile, electricity load in Penajam Paser Utara Regency is 15.89 MVA, supplied by Substation (GI) Petung which capacity is 90 MVA. At the same time, electricity load in Kutai Kertanegara Regency is only 117.54 MW which is supplied by GI Karang Joang, GI Manggarasari, and GI Senipah with total capacity 290 MVA.

Based on PT. PLN data, the Kalimantan Grid currently has 331.5 MW of reserve margin.

The reserve amount comes from net capacity of 1,778 MW, while load is 1,446.5 MW. The total power capacity of all power plants built in Kalimantan is 1,984 MW. (IY)
