Minister Arifin's Message to Academics: Intensify NRE Research
The development of New, Renewable Energy (NRE) currently promoted by the government has the potential to contribute significantly to national energy security and sustainable economy. Realizing the crucial role of NRE, the support from universities to intensify research in the NRE subsector is highly needed.
These points are expressed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif at the International ITS (Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember) Business Summit 2019 at Hotel Shangrilla Jakarta, Friday (15/11).
"The government needs the support from universities to intensify research in the NRE subsector. This will encourage the NRE industry to be more efficient. Please continue advanced technology research so that universities can give input to the government," said Arifin.
The International ITS Business Summit 2019 is a means to bring together stakeholders such as the government, universities, and business people.
In addition to realizing the energy security in the future, a 23% target of NRE-based energy mix in 2025 is projected to support national economic growth through labor absorption.
"The world has talked about energy transition since the Paris Agreement initiative that produces clean energy. The abundant potential of NRE in Indonesia will attract investors. So, this will increase better, sustainable economic growth through labor absorption," said Arifin.
Arifin shows that the success of many countries competing to use the sun as a source of electricity proves NRE as future energy. For this reason, the use of NRE will be optimized through the execution of the 35 thousand Megawatt (MW) mega project. "As the energy of the future, NRE should supply the 35 thousand MW program," Arifin ended.
