Gas Plays a Key Role in Indonesia's Energy Transition, Energy Minister

Taking up the invitation from Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, to become a VIP guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the 2021 Edition of Gastech, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif explained the important role of natural gas in Indonesia's transition to more environmentally friendly energy and invited investors from the UAE to make investment in Indonesia.

"Natural gas still plays a key role in bridging the energy transition. Gas also helps develop clean energy technologies on a basis of fossil fuel and accelerate emission reduction," said Arifin in the panel discussion of the Gastech 2021 opening which was moderated by John Defterios, former CNN Business Emerging Markets Editor, in Dubai on Tuesday (21/9).

The optimized use of natural gas as well as the development of new, renewable energy are aimed at passing on a better life to the future younger generations. To this end, the transition process requires funding and technology.

"We make every effort to support the global intention of providing environmentally friendly energy to reduce the impacts of climate change. We will do this as soon and as sustainable as possible, in the sense that we adjust to our capabilities. With abundant resources and high demand, we need financial support from the international community," continued Arifin.

During the panel discussion which was also attended by the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazrouei, Turkish Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Qatar Minister of Energy Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, and Secretary General of OPEC Mohammad Barkindo Sanusi, Minister Arifin also explained that Indonesia had renewable energy sources which potential could still be developed and, therefore, invited investors to come to Indonesia.

"Indonesia has renewable energy sources, and several renewable energy potential in Indonesia can still be tapped. From a regulatory side, Indonesia has simplified the licensing process to attract investors to come to Indonesia and take up new opportunities," Minister Arifin added.

Still within the Gastech 2021 events, Minister Arifin had a number of bilateral meetings, for example with the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the CEOs of the UEA energy companies such as Masdar and Mubadala as well as the executives of Saudi Arabian ACWA Power and Danish Haldor Topsoe.

Minister Arifin thanked the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure for the invitation to the Gastech 2021 and gave his appreciation to UAE companies that had invested in Indonesia. He also expressed his expectation that there would be several concrete cooperation contracts to be signed during the coming visit of the Indonesian President to the UAE.

"Thank you for the invitation to Dubai and the participation of UAE energy companies in Indonesia. We invite UAE investors to invest in renewable energy sources in Indonesia because large amounts of renewable energy potential can still be tapped," Minister Arifin concluded.

For the record, Gastech 2021 is an exhibition and conference on gas, LNG, hydrogen, and energy industries. In general, the event showcases gas exploration and production, projects, trade, investment, ships and shipbuilding industry, storage, generation, hydrogen, CCUS, liquefaction and regasification as well as other topics. This event brings together important figures in the energy sector from governments (ministers or high-level officials), executives of oil and gas companies, and technical experts in natural gas projects.
