Energy Transition Create Job Opportunities for Millennials, Says Energy Minister

The transition from fossil energy to New, Renewable Energy (NRE) will give a real blessing for millennials, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Arifin Tasrif, has said in a discussion titled 'Road to the 26th Session of Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland' held in Jakarta on Thursday (7/10).

"The energy transition will create considerable job opportunities so that young generation can become key leaders in multi-institutional collaboration," said Arifin.

For Arifin, the young generation plays a crucial role in directing the national economic growth in the future. "The young generation is one of the key factors that determine the success of sustainable, low-carbon economic development," explained Arifin.

For this reason, the millennials need to be aware of the processes influencing the transition to clean energy, environmental preservation, and mitigation of the impacts of climate change, all of which make up Indonesia's commitment to the Paris Agreement.

"We expect young people to give new ideas and innovations in NRE development, help campaign for the use of clean energy, and use clean energy consistently themselves," added Arifin.

Arifin put forward several suggestions for the millennials to do. First, be directly involved by giving their support in NRE development. Second, disseminate the message that the use of clean energy is vital to support the long-term energy security.

Next, create NRE innovations that can directly be used by the public. "For example, make biomass from waste or use local plants for fuels such as bioethanol," Arifin added.

Another step is by giving some support to the public and developing startups especially in energy saving applications. "The young generation can become key leaders in multi-institutional collaboration," Arifin explained.

The Ministry of EMR is making two policy breakthroughs specially addressed to young generation, namely Solar Power Initiative Movement (Gerilya) and Energy Patriots. "These young people are our spearheads of the NRE utilization across Indonesia," Arifin concluded. (IY)
