Electrical Engineers must Have a Valid Competency Certificate, Says Official

Electrical Supporting Businesses are required to employ electrical engineers who have a valid competency certificate in accordance with the scope of the Business Permit, Director of Electrical Engineering and Environment of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Wanhar, has said in a webinar titled "Business Permit for Electrical Supporting Services" held in Jakarta on Thursday (28/10).

Another speaker, Coordinator for Electrical Engineer Standards, Tri Handoko, said that to increase the competitiveness of local engineers wishing to enter the job market, it is necessary to develop a competency certification program. The first step to implement competency certification is providing relevant competency standards.

"The formal evidence of the ability or competency of a technical staff is his/her competency certificate, and to support the competency certification, we need to have a competency standard," said Tri.

In line with Law Number 11 of 2020 on Job Creation, the Ministry of EMR has issued Regulation of Minister of EMR Number 6 of 2021 on Competency Standardization for Electrical Engineers.

Tri went on to explain that the competency standardization regulation aimed to provide the stakeholders in the electricity business with a reference for competency certification, formulation of draft competency training standards, and formulation of engineering policies in the electricity subsector; support the electricity business in providing reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly electrical systems, improve the competency of electrical engineers, realize orderly implementation of work in the electricity subsector, create consistency and traceability of competency standardization of electrical engineers, and increase the competitive advantage of electrical engineers.

"Ministerial Regulation Number 6 of 2021 is expected to provide ease of doing business in the electricity subsector while still prioritizing electricity safety so as to create reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly electrical systems and provide competency certification for electrical engineers by improving the ability, competency, and integrity of the local workers so that they will be able to compete at the national, regional, and global levels," Tri concluded.
